Commissioner’s David Hamilton Jackson Day Message
Fellow Virgin Islanders,
The Virgin Islands Department of Labor (VIDOL) wishes a safe, happy, and thoughtful “Liberty Day,” in the name of our very own David Hamilton Jackson. Join us as we continue to remember David Hamilton Jackson as a labor activist and advocate of a free press. As Virgin Islanders, we are resilient people with a history of self-determination. Jackson remains a historical and cultural icon whose consistent advocation of the working class paved the way for the Virgin Islands that we live in today. He is a reminder that we should stand up for our rights as citizens.
Jackson is a hallmark of his enduring legacy in his different facets as a labor leader, politician, community activist, and journalist. Despite the danger, Jackson understood the importance of educating the public about their rights and fighting back against injustice that impacted the dwindling quality of life.
In observance of this day, let us use the cultural lessons from our historical and modern-day leaders to carry on a legacy of strength and progress. We must continue to stand collectively in modern times to engage as active citizens and allow the passion for your fellow Virgin Islanders and their pursuit to improve our islands. We are reminded on Liberty Day that the best way for us to move forward is together. Remember the cost of Liberty on this day and the life and legacy of the great David Hamilton Jackson.
Respectfully,
Gary A. Molloy
Commissioner
Virgin Islands Department of Labor
