Good Day to all the hardworking men and women of the U.S. Virgin Islands,
I hope this message finds you in a safe, supportive, and healthy work environment. As we celebrate the 130th Labor Day this September 2nd, many of us are surrounded by family and friends, honoring the hard work of Virgin Islanders and reflecting on the challenges workers have faced. Labor Day is a time to enjoy the rewards of our efforts.
The mission of the Virgin Islands Department of Labor (VIDOL) is to administer effective programs and services that develop, protect, and sustain a viable workforce. In recognition of this, Governor Albert Bryan Jr. has proclaimed September as Labor and Management Awareness Month (Labor Month). Throughout September, we will focus on themes that include: Labor and Management Awareness, Employee Health and Wellness, Labor Affairs and Employee Rights and Protections, and Workforce Development. VIDOL will be actively engaging with the community, showcasing the wide range of labor services available, and highlighting resources to support and grow a sustainable workforce.
As of July 2024, the unemployment rate in the Virgin Islands stands at 3.8%, unchanged from June 2024. This includes a 4.5% unemployment rate in the St. Croix district and 3.2% in the St. Thomas/St. John district. These figures demonstrate our ongoing commitment to workforce development and improving the quality of life for all Virgin Islanders, particularly wage earners, job seekers, veterans, and retirees. Our goals include enhancing working conditions, expanding opportunities for profitable employment, and ensuring that work-related benefits and rights are protected.
We extend our heartfelt appreciation to all workers across the territory—including those in government, the public and non-profit sectors, and entrepreneurs—for their unwavering dedication to serving our community. The Virgin Islands Department of Labor wishes everyone a happy Labor Month and a safe remainder of the hurricane season.
Thank you,
Gary Molloy
Commissioner
